What to Include in a Student Portfolio

Student’s assessment portfolios are collections of student work meant to define individual progress and these can either be in physical or digital form—portfolios’ are now increasingly popular. Make sure that portfolios should accomplish in a way that shows student growth and change over time, increase student self-assessment skills, identify specific strengths and weaknesses, and track the development and performance of work samples, tests, papers, etc.

Designing of Portfolio vary by grade and subject of the students but they should paint an accurate picture of a student’s skill and Performance. Here is a list of items that you can choose if you are not sure about where to start. List of all Definitions and a collection of individual goals for the year, selected and updated by students monthly, quarterly, etc. Reading logs, Photographs of students working and all-important notes from one-on-one or small group time with students (e.g. guided reading notes). A collection of graded math quizzes showing performance trends and Creative writing samples, including stories, poems, songs, and scripts.

How to get most out of Portfolios – After deciding the important work that shows student development now you have to make sure that both you and your students benefit as much as possible from this process, involve them in the assembly and ask them to reflect on the finished product.

With the help of Portfolios, you can view overall growth by using a few choice items, You have to take the step for establishing a sense of ownership in your students and cut back on your own assembly time so that more effort can be put into designing future instruction using portfolio material. Being a Tutor you have to ask your students to select pieces of their work over the course of a month, semester, or year—they should have ample time to build their portfolios.
